भारत में दो क्षेत्र ऐसे हैं जिनका नाम विशेष कारणों से बदल गया - एक तो 'मगध' जो बौद्ध विहारों की अधिकता के कारण "बिहार" बन गया और दूसरा 'दक्षिण कौशल' जो छत्तीस गढ़ों को अपने में समाहित रखने के कारण "छत्तीसगढ़" बन गया। किन्तु ये दोनों ही क्षेत्र अत्यन्त प्राचीन काल से ही भारत को गौरवान्वित करते रहे हैं। "छत्तीसगढ़" तो वैदिक और पौराणिक काल से ही विभिन्न संस्कृतियों के विकास का केन्द्र रहा है। यहाँ के प्राचीन मन्दिर तथा उनके भग्वावशेष इंगित करते हैं कि यहाँ पर वैष्णव, शैव, शाक्त, बौद्ध के साथ ही अनेकों आर्य तथा अनार्य संस्कृतियों का विभिन्न कालों में प्रभाव रहा है।

हिंदी भाषा के प्रचार प्रसार में बाबू देवकीनन्दन खत्री के उपन्यास चन्द्रकान्ता का बहुत बड़ा योगदान रहा है। केवल चन्द्रकान्ता उपन्यास को पढ़ने के लिये लाखों लोगों ने हिंदी सीखी। देवकीनन्दन खत्री जी का जन्म 18 जून 1861 (आषाढ़ कृष्ण 7 स० 1918) को पूसा-मुजफ्फ़रपुर, बिहार में हुआ था। उनके पिता का नाम लाला ईश्वरदास था। उनके पूर्वज पंजाब के निवासी थे तथा मुग़लों के राज्यकाल में ऊँचे पदों पर कार्य करते थे। महाराज रणजीत सिंह के पुत्र शेरसिंह के शासनकाल में लाला ईश्वरदास काशी में आकर बस गये। देवकीनन्दन खत्री जी की प्रारम्भिक शिक्षा उर्दू-फ़ारसी में हुई थी। बाद में उन्होंने हिंदी, संस्कृत एवं अंग्रेजी का भी अध्ययन किया।
